HISTORY

We own the freehold and actively manage several commercial properties on Chancery Lane and its surrounding streets, which have been in the ownership of the Bacon family for more than 450 years.

Privately owned, with almost all of our c.100 shareholders, direct descendants of Sir Nicholas Bacon (1510 - 1579), Lord Keeper of the Seal during the reign of Elizabeth I and father of the philosopher and statesman, Sir Francis Bacon.

The name ‘Colville’ derives from a period when the company owned numerous freehold properties in and around Colville Square in Bayswater - sold in the 1940’s, the company then acquired the Chancery Lane estate, until then owned directly by the senior branch of the Bacon family.

Over the past century, we’ve bought in all previous long leases and acquired management control of the properties - either redeveloping directly or granting new long leases to third parties, subject to development agreements and a carried interest in the development.

With day-to-day responsibility, our hands-on senior management team, actively invests in and manages the properties under our direct control and takes a proactive long-term approach to broadening our offer, including having invested directly in a rapidly expanding operator of managed serviced office accommodation, Agora Spaces – with two of its portfolio, Quality House and Midway House, part of the Colville Estate.
